The Advantages and Applications of Silicone Sealing Strips in Energy-Saving Doors and Windows

As a key material for energy-saving doors and windows, sealing strips play an important role in water tightness, air tightness, and energy saving. Silicone rubber sealing strips, as a revolutionary sealing product, provide perfect sealing for energy-saving doors and windows, with unparalleled performance advantages.

High-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber has excellent performance, mainly including:

1. Excellent cold and heat resistance

Silicone rubber can be used for a long time in environments ranging from -70℃ to 200℃. The good high and low temperature performance of silicone rubber is particularly important in regions of China with large latitude ranges. In southern China, the temperature on sunny doors, windows, and walls can reach 70℃ in summer, while in northern regions during winter, temperatures can drop to -40℃. The huge temperature difference severely restricts the use of PVC, thermoplastic elastomers, and ethylene-propylene diene monomer rubber. General plastics and rubbers or elastomers become brittle at -20℃, and construction is impossible even at 0℃. However, silicone rubber shows no significant change in physical properties from -70℃ to 200℃.

2. Excellent weather aging resistance

Whether plastic or ethylene-propylene rubber, their materials are mainly composed of carbon-oxygen chains and carbon-carbon chains. The bond energies of these materials' C-O and C-C bonds (336KJ/mol and 356KJ/mol respectively) are lower than the ultraviolet irradiation energy (370 KJ/mol). In a thermally aged environment, chain scission can easily occur, leading to material degradation, which manifests as poor UV aging and thermal aging resistance of sealing strips. In contrast, silicone rubber has a main chain structure primarily composed of silicon-oxygen bonds, with Si-O-Si bond energy (452KJ/mol) higher than the ultraviolet irradiation energy, thus silicone rubber exhibits excellent weather aging resistance. After 30 years of outdoor aging under sunlight, rain, water, and ozone, its performance shows no significant decline, allowing it to match the lifespan of doors and windows, which is unattainable by other materials.

3. Good elasticity and rebound

Building doors and windows are always subjected to mechanical changes from external and internal forces, such as thermal expansion and contraction, instantaneous loads, wind loads, seismic effects, and long-term loads: self-weight, temperature difference deformation, snow loads, etc. The excellent elasticity and good compression deformation of silicone rubber are unmatched by other rubbers and plastics, and silicone rubber can be adjusted between Shore A 30-85 to achieve optimal sealing performance.

4. Safe and environmentally friendly

In 1954, silicone rubber was confirmed through human experiments to be: "non-toxic, odorless, does not adhere to human tissues and blood, has good biocompatibility, and no abnormalities were found in cell tissues when in contact with the highly sensitive tissues of warm-blooded animals." The publication of this result also shows that as an elastomer material in the environmental protection and medical fields, silicone rubber is the safest. According to the certification by the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration), there is currently no new environmentally friendly material that is less harmful to the human body than silicone rubber, highlighting its excellent environmental performance in construction, which is undoubtedly of special significance.

5. Good breathability with selective permeability

Recent studies show that the oxygen permeability of silicone rubber is 25 times that of natural rubber and 428.6 times that of butyl rubber (IIR). This property helps maintain fresh air in living spaces, making it most suitable for human life.

6. Smooth surface with various colors

It has good surface performance, and colors can be made in various shades, allowing it to match any color of door and window profiles, providing a good decorative effect. Excellent surface performance includes anti-adhesion and water repellency.
