The Importance of Adhesive Primers and Release Coatings in Film Cutting Tapes

Dec 21,2022

There are also adhesive backing materials (such as printed paper, plastic film, textiles, velvet fabric, etc.). If you want to securely attach the adhesive to the backing material, a tape primer must be used. The strong adhesion allows the bathroom mirror to be fixed to the floor with tape. Without a topcoat or adhesive primer, and without any assistance in securing it, the adhesive may not adhere firmly to the tape backing, and the bathroom mirror could fall off the wall.
The Importance of Adhesive Primers and Release Coatings in Film Cutting Tapes

Tape plays an important role in ensuring adhesion and functionality in our daily lives, industrial production, and the electronics industry, particularly through the use of primers and release coatings in film-cutting tapes. As a common film-cutting material, tape is characterized by strong adhesion and robust structure. Below, we will explore the significance of adhesive primers and release coatings in film-cutting tapes.

Primer

Introduction to Primer (Adhesive Primer)

Ordinary film-cutting tape generally consists of two key components: adhesive, which is adhered to the tape in a pressure-sensitive manner and has long-lasting bonding strength. It is also used to fix adhesive agents to substrates (such as printing paper, plastic films, textiles, velvet, etc.). Nowadays, different types of tape have different applications, varying in adhesion speed, size, and durability.

This is the area where the primer plays its role. It is a thin coating on the substrate that enhances adhesion. If you want to securely fix the adhesive to the substrate, you need to use a tape primer. If the tape is only for temporary use and leaves no residue after removal—such as masking tape—then a primer is not needed.

Tape used for permanent bonding of two objects does not require a primer. Strong adhesion allows a bathroom mirror to be securely fixed to the floor with tape. Without a topcoat or adhesive primer, the adhesive may not adhere firmly to the tape substrate, and the bathroom mirror could fall off the wall.

Structure of Single-Sided and Double-Sided Tape

Primer Enhances Adhesion

The role of the substrate is to fix the adhesive to the tape. Plastic is a common base material, as it effectively serves this purpose. However, some plastics and other materials cannot adhere firmly to the adhesive. These materials include high-density polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), Teflon, plastics, and silicone. In technical terms, they have a "low surface energy." The "secret" of the primer lies in its ability to increase surface tension, thereby allowing the adhesive to bond more firmly.

Release Coating/Substrate Material (Release Layer)

Some tapes have a special release layer on the top, known as a release coating and release substrate material. Its function is to control the adhesion of the rolled tape to the top layer.

Release substrate materials are generally used in double-sided tape. Aluminum silicate paper or plastic film are important types of release substrate materials. The choice of special substrate material depends on the application scenario. If film cutting is required, polyester substrate materials are preferred. If the tape is to be used in a humid environment, high-density polyethylene coated whiteboard paper is used due to its strong dimensional stability. In most applications, paper-based substrate materials are a good choice.
